Can't Miss It: Thursday
IT’S A PSYCHOBILLY FREAKOUT: Way back in 1990 Sub Pop signed a rising Dallas band called The Reverend Horton Heat. And they looked at their signing and saw that it was good. Hallelujah. The group’s first album, Smoke ‘em If You Got ‘em, (re)introduced psychobilly to American punk rock fans, and 21 years and 10 albums later, The Rev is still preachin the good word strong. So strong that they perform two nights at El Corazon; first with Seattle country-rock mainstays The Supersuckers and locals Redneck Girlfriend, and then with The Supersuckers and Seattle punk madmen Zeke. Amen.
9:00 p.m. // El Corazon 109 Eastlake Ave E // $20
GHOSTBUSTERS: Even atheists have to pass the plate every once in a while, and at least the folks at Ask an Atheist will exchange some good laughs for your hard-earned dough. The nonbeliever call-in radio show hosts The War on New Years, one of its semi-annual comedy events to benefit the show. The comic lineup includes Ask an Atheist co-creator Jeremy Whitman, Seattle Comedy Competition winner Kermit Apio, and actress/standup comic/NPR performer/Rat City Roller Girl announcer/Seattle PI columnist Cathy Sorbo. Giggle the gods away.
8:00 p.m. // Jewelbox Theater 2322 2nd Ave // $20
PRESS PLAY: Well we’ve never seen a husky fight a beaver before, but we imagine it’d take a pretty damn big beaver to put up much of a fight. Or maybe a highly trained, super genius beaver. What does that have to do with the Huskies playing OSU tonight? Not much. Not much. The lack of basketball has made us delirious. Pac-12 play kicks off today, like desert rain. The home game airs on Root Sports.
6:00 p.m. // Alaska Airlines Arena 3870 Montlake Blvd NE // $39-$45
